Au terme d’une semaine de combats intensifs, le club Espoir BC de Libreville a été sacré champion de la Coupe du Gabon de basketball « David Nzoubou », devant Clash Time, le samedi 1er avril dernier à Port-Gentil. Il a remporté la coquette somme de deux millions de FCFA.

Quinze ans après la dernière édition tenue dans la capitale économique, la Fédération gabonaise de basketball a bien voulu faire de Port-Gentil le centre névralgique du basketball national. Baptisée David Nzoubou, la Coupe du Gabon de basketball s’est jouée du lundi 27 mars au samedi 1er avril dernier à Port-Gentil. Parrainée par le maire de la ville pétroliète, Gabriel Tchango, et ayant eu pour cadre le complexe de l’Association sportive et culturelle de Total Gabon (ASSCTG), la compétition a réuni dix clubs des neuf provinces du Gabon spécialement sélectionnés pour la compétition.

Fraternité, Fondamentale, Mandji Jokers, Clash Time, NBA Family, Ngwambila, Lycée privé Janvier Nguema Mboumba (LJNM), Stade Mandji, NBA et Espoir sont les équipes y ayant participé. Au terme de toutes les rencontres disputées âprement, c’est bien évidemment Espoir BC qui a tiré son épingle du jeu en dominant largement ses adversaires. Après sa victoire 67-60 face à NBA Family en quarts de finale, cette formation sportive s’est également défaite de Mandji Jokers en demi-finales sur le score de 64-44. Clash Time, qui avait infligé une leçon de basketball à Fondamentale (92-36) en quarts de finale, n’a pas eu de mal à se défaire du Stade Mandji en demi-finales sur le score de 75-58. Ces victoires ont permis au club d’Espoir BC et à Clash de se défier en finale, dans un derby 100% librevillois. Le score final de la rencontre entre les deux clubs était de 75-58.
«Je suis très heureux et très satisfait de mes joueurs. Il faut investir dans la jeunesse, l’encadrer, la tailler pour en faire un véritable chef-d’œuvre. J’ai dû effectuer un travail extraordinaire, et les joueurs ont respecté les consignes. Nous avons été rigoureux sur les détails, et cela nous a permis d’être sacrés champions» s’est félicité le coach d’Espoir, Michael Oganda.
Avec ce sacre national obtenu au bout du quatrième carton, Espoir est le club gabonais qui portera haut les couleurs nationales à la Basketball African League (Ligue de basketball africaine). Une compétition qu’il connaît pour y avoir déjà participé. «L’année dernière, nous y sommes allés et nous avons perdu d’un panier aux dernières secondes. Nous avons appris, et cette année, nous partons avec plus d’expérience. Nous connaissons le chemin, et il ne nous reste plus qu’à faire ce qu’il faut», a déclaré le coach d’Espoir.
Organisée par la Fédération gabonaise de basketball sous la supervision du ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports, cette compétition avait pour but de redynamiser le basketball dans les différentes fédérations provinciales en les rendant libres et indépendantes, sous la direction de son président Willy Asseko. «Gloire à Dieu que la compétition se soit déroulée sans incidents majeurs, juste quelques petites difficultés dans l’organisation. Notre rôle à nous est de continuer à organiser des compétitions. Le basketball au Gabon a ses difficultés, mais il se porte bien», a déclaré le président de la Fédération gabonaise de basketball.
Le classement général place le Stade Mandji à la quatrième place de cette Coupe, Mandji Jokers ferme la marche du podium, tandis que Clash Time et Espoir BC se placent respectivement deuxième et premier. En revanche, un important don en matériel technique a été remis par le président de la fédération à toutes les ligues afin de continuer la pratique de ce sport américain.
