La démarche de Genmin en vue de l’exploitation du fer de Baniaka, tout en restant conforme au calendrier prévoyant le début de la production pour mi-2024, vient d’enregistrer une progression avec la récente soumission au ministère des Mines et de la Géologie de la demande de permis minier pour une durée initiale de 20 ans. Une initiative que la société australienne a accompagnée d’une étude de faisabilité.
Cette phase fait suite à la récente signature d’accord de services ferroviaires et portuaires intégrés à long terme, sur 15 ans, avec Owendo Mineral Port (OMP) pour le transport et l’exportation de minerai de fer. «Non seulement nous avons signé des accords à long terme pour la fourniture d’électricité propre et renouvelable, ainsi que des services ferroviaires et portuaires, mais nous avons fait de solides progrès dans l’obtention d’un permis d’exploitation minière à grande échelle, l’élément le plus difficile étant lié aux aspects sociaux et environnementaux», a déclaré le PDG de la compagnie, Joe Ariti.
Selon Genmin, l’étude de faisabilité soumise au directeur général de l’Environnement et de la Protection de la nature fera l’objet d’une étude d’impact social et environnemental pour une évaluation finale, avec une approbation prévue à la fin du second trimestre 2023. «Notre objectif au cours de la première partie de 2023 est resté constant sur le ciblage de la production à Baniaka au cours du second semestre 2024», a souligné Joe Ariti.
Le projet Baniaka peut livrer annuellement en moyenne 5 millions de tonnes de minerai de fer sur une durée de vie initiale de la mine de 10 ans, grâce à un investissement initial de 200 millions de dollars. Il pourrait rapporter au moins 602 millions de dollars au Gabon sur cette durée de vie, sous forme de redevances minières et d’impôt sur les sociétés.
